self defense weapons questions and answers
Q: Where can you find out which self defense weapons are legal in Washington State?
Does anyone know where you can find the actual law outlining what kinds of self defense weapons (i.e. pepper spray, mace, stun batons, tazers, ect) are legal for an individual to own in Washington State and what kind of license, if any, you need to carry these items?
I would love to get a link to a .gov website with this information wrather than some random website on the internet so I know the information is actually correct.
Thanks
A: What you are looking for is the State Code, that is, the actual laws themselves. Below I have provided a link to the Revised Code of Washington, specifically Chapter 9.41 which contains all laws on weapons, including guns.
Since laws are hard to read, I will provide some guidance and try to sum these up. First, There are laws on guns and there are laws on everything else that isn't a gun. That's just how American law works most of the time.
For guns, Washington is a "shall-issue" state. This means if you are old enough and have a clean background, you can get a permit to carry a concealed handgun without having to be a cop or security guard. You apply, you qualify, you get a permit, no trouble. This permit is only good for handguns and does not apply to other weapons. There are no permits for other weapons.
For non-firearms it gets more complicated (see 9.41.250). There are laws on ownership, and laws on carrying.
On the statute's face, it appears to be illegal to manufactures, sell, or dispose of or possess a "slung shot or sandclub" (this means a blackjack, a small weighted club for bashing heads), metal knuckles, or a switchblade (a knife that opens automatically when you press a button).
It is legal to own, but not legal to carry a doubled edged knife (a dagger or "dirk") concealed.
There is not mention of pepper spray, batons, or any electrical weapon anywhere in the law. This makes them legal to own and to carry technically, because there is no law prohibiting them. However there are two caveats:
1. Local cities have the right to make their own weapon laws. Be wary of what your city ordinances are; the vast majority are published online publicly and free to access.
2. It is illegal to openly carry ANY weapon in such a manner than it alarms those around you or intimidates another person. So if you carry a legal weapon, carry it concealed. (9.41.270)
Q: Is that legal to use baton as a self defense weapons in Oregon?
Friend bought me an Baton for this Thanksgiving, so I just wondering is that legal to keep it in my car and use it as a self defense weapons if needs(in Oregon)?
A: A "baton" is specifically defined in Oregon law as a "weapon". Whether you can possess one depends upon where it is and what is your intent (including that which may be inferred from circumstances).
(5) “Weapon” means: ... (f) A club, bat, baton, billy club, bludgeon, knobkerrie, nunchaku, nightstick, truncheon or any similar instrument, the use of which could inflict injury upon a person or property;
ORS 166.360.
Unless you have a license to carry a concealed handgun, or other exemption, you may not possess such a weapon in any public building,
Furthermore, "(1) A person commits the crime of unlawful use of a weapon if the person: (a) Attempts to use unlawfully against another, or carries or possesses with intent to use unlawfully against another, any dangerous or deadly weapon ... [not including] [(2)](b) Persons lawfully defending life or property as provided in ORS 161.219;..."
" ORS 166.220. There are, of course, other exceptions.
“Dangerous weapon” means any weapon, device, instrument, material or substance which under the circumstances in which it is used, attempted to be used or threatened to be used, is readily capable of causing death or serious physical injury. ORS 161,015
Therefore, under a strict reading of the rather self-contradictory statutes, if your intent is self-defense, then your possession of a dangerous weapon, even without intent to "unlawfully" use it on another person, would be exempt. In theory. The D.A. won't see it that way. You will be arrested, jailed, bailed and tried. It will cost you. Under their own statutes self-defense with a dangerous weapon is exempt from this charge, even if the use turned out to be unlawful. Go figure.
Q: What self-defense weapons are legal to carry and use?
It seems every self-defense weapon is now illegal from Sap gloves to brass knuckles, even some pepper sprays. I live in Pennsylvania in Philly and I should be allowed to protect myself but some of these laws are ridiculous. Please tell me exactly what I can and cannot carry.
pepper spray is for pussies
A: Chainsaw is all you need.
Q: are bows and arrows legal self defense weapons in Texas?
please don't give me arguments of practicality or effectiveness, or even problems with self defense weapons, just answer the question.
In the U.S. and more specifically Texas are bows eligible to be self defense weapons when used as such? or are there legal issues?
A: Yes in Texas they are.
Q: What small, on-the-go self-defense "weapons" are legal?
We're in California. And my mum's gonna go for night classes and I thought I should get her some self-defense weapons... just in case.
I'm thinking of a pepper spray, but of course, the more lethal (yet legal) the better x)
A few examples of non-legal weapons would be perfect too, thanks.
A: You are getting a lot of recommendations for illegal weapons. I take it you don't want Mom arrested, nor to be packing heat openly on her way to class. My answer is on that basis.
A knife is a TERRIBLE defense weapon, and if it has a fixed blade it is illegal to carry concealed (there is no limit on the size of a knife which is not concealed unless it is a switch blade). IT is also illegal to carry a concealed firearm (which will probably stand up even after D.C. v. Heller). Tasers are considered loaded firearms in California, and thus illegal to possess in most places. The ASP would be a billy club under California law, and thus illegal (unless, again that is a "arm" to which D.C. v. Heller applies). Your best bets are pepper spray or stun guns, which are legal.
Q: What are some of todays modern self defense weapons?
Despite the gun, what are some things that men train with in order to defend themselves? And please dont say Katanas and Claymores because thats just not true. I mean train to use in the street? What are conventional weapons?
A: i never go anywhere without my weapon,it lives in my pants.
Q: What are the laws with self defense weapons?
Weapons like is it illegal to carry batons, taser or pepper spray?
Weapons like is it illegal to carry batons, taser or pepper spray in california?
A: Yes, the Liberal establishment in California believe that you should just cooperate with robbery, rape, and pedophilia and have made it illegal to posses any of the defensive weapons you have listed.
Q: Do you carry any kind of self defense weapons on you?
Hey,
I was looking into getting an expandable baton..
and i was wondering if anyone else has one.. or carries any other type of self defense items.
and if so, has it worked for you so far? what do you keep on you in case you have to defend yourself in a parking lot, on the street, or wherever. whats your approach to self defense?
A: For the record, just because you want to protect yourself doesn't mean you live in a bad neighborhood. It's also not being paranoid. I agree with the police officer. If someone tries to rape or attack you, don't just hit them. Do the job right. God willing, this will never happen to me, but if it does I'm not taking the chance on the dude not going down. Also, I'm a woman and I live alone. I live in a pretty good neighborhood but bad things happen everywhere. Crime is just more dense in certain areas. I want the peace of mind in knowing I can protect myself and my home if someone were to break in. I also have a concealed carry permit. I don't carry my gun all the time, just if I'm going certain places. The best thing you can do is get in touch with the law enforcement in your area and ask what they think you should do. And PLEASE, whatever you do, do it the legal way. I don't know how it works in your state, but in my home state, even a knife or baton requires a concealed carry permit. Each state has their own self defense laws so you can go to your State Bureau of Investigation, county sheriff's office, or even a local gun range and pick up a copy. They should all have it available. I don't relish the thought of taking another life, but if someone tries to hurt me, my life comes before theirs. It's that simple. Good luck and God bless!
Q: What are some legal self defense weapons that can be carried in Texas?
And if not carried around in public, then which are legal in a car?
A: The short answer is pepper sprays and stun guns. If you want to get a permit, you can carry a gun. I, however, prefer less than lethal methods because when you take someone down with a stun gun, they stay down, at least long enough for you to exit the area or handcuff them if they've invaded your home. See http://ledefensetech.wordpress.com/2009/04/04/lets-talk-aboutstun-guns/ for more information on stun guns and http://ledefensetech.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/lets-talk-aboutpepper-spray/ for more on pepper spray. Finally you can check out http://ledefensetech.wordpress.com/2009/04/04/self-defense-synergy/ for a discussion of how to protect yourself and your property without lethal force.
Stun guns and pepper spray are not considered firearms
by the BATFE, so you don't have to worry about the Feds. Apparently in Texas you can carry non-lethal weapons anywhere, but you'd need to see if the owner of an establishment will allow you to carry inside. But if it's concealed, who would know?
One final thing to note is that pepper spray is not allowed on planes at all. You can carry a small contact stun gun on a plane, but it has to be in your checked luggage. Keep in mind that it might not be legal to be in possession of a stun gun at your destination. And I wouldn't bring any of that stuff into a Federal Building, Courthouse or the State Capital.
The reason I'm against lethal force is more from a law point of view. If you don't kill someone, there's much less of a chance of being sued by the survivor's family.
Q: Do you carry any self defense weapons while cycling?
do you carry and self defense weapons while cycling? I was considering buying pepperspray and carrying it with me when I go bike. I recently considered this when I read on a forum someone suggested it to prevent muggings. Any suggestions?
Not worried about it, but its just a safety precaution. Bay Area, California
A: there is ussualy something in my bag that i could use as a weapon in a pinch, but getting to it quickly would be an issue. im not so concerned about being mugged as i am by being run down by a negligent or angry driver... no amount of pepper spray is gonna help.
Q: My brother got surgery on his arm. What are some legal self defense weapons for him?
He lives in New York...I wanted to get him a baton but i think that's illegal...Any suggestions?
A: It has been said that the last great legal self defense item in the US is a walking stick.
Q: What are some good self defense weapons?
A couple weeks ago I started noticing this guy falling me home from school. It kind of freaks me out. I'm only 13, so what are some things I can carry around?
A: The best thing for you to do is tell your parents, now would be a good time. If someone does approach, yell as loud as you can and run the other direction, don't stop yelling or running until you're in a safe place.
Q: Cheap self defense weapons for back to school?
Im going to be going back to school in a fairly large city. I really dont feel comfortable not having some type of weapon to defend myself in case someone attacks me in some way or another.
Anyone got any good ideas on what to carry as far as being concealable and legal as well? I just cant carry a gun of course.
A: I really dont know much about it but I found a little guide with some information maybe it will help you out some. I dont live in or near a big city so I dont have to worry about crime as much.

Q: What are some Legal Self Defense Weapons?
just wondering its for my school project
like i know improvised weapons but legal one
that were meant for self-defense
A: Depending on your state and locality:
Non-lethal:
Pepper spray
Tasers
Batons (including retractable)
Lethal:
Rifles, pistols, shotguns.
You'll need licenses to possess and carry them in most states, Indiana just requires you to buy the lifetime carry permit for like $170, you don't need a license to possess one in your home, and you don't need either for a shotgun.
