self defense moves questions and answers

Q: What are some good, simple self-defense moves?
I'm a wuss & a coward. I admit it. I've always been a very weak guy who doesn't know anything about fighting. As a result, I have been bullied a lot in my life, especially in my teen years & have had never had a girlfriend. I am in my mid-20's now & don't have any problems with bullies, but I still have never had a GF and I sometimes have a habit of letting jerks walk all over me. It rarely happens & I have gotten better at standing up for myself, but I am always secretly scared whenever I do stand up for myself & I think I'd have more self-confidence if I knew how to defend myself. I've tried both Kung-Fu & boxing, but it never worked out. I'm a simple guy who wants to know just a small hand full of some simple self-defense moves. I don't wanna ever actually engage in a fight. My plan is, if I ever have to fight is to do the simple self defense move, then run away & call the police. I'm not a fighter. I don't wanna be a fighter. I just wanna learn how to survive & be more confident.

A: You are your own worse enemy in that you are what and how you think you are. You make statements like, ' I am a wuss and a coward." Your subconscious mind says OK, your wish is my command, and you are therefore a wuss and a coward. With the proper mindset and self confidence which will come from inside after you have re-written your " Rules of Engagement", if you will, you will become a new man, and without the ongoing fear factor, you will find less desire or need for learning an effective fight system. Without the proper mindset and self confidence, Steven Segal would be a wuss and a coward. It is imperative you master these two qualities first, before learning any fight system. After having done that, get ready for that special woman in your life, as she will soon be there for you. You can take all the flying lessons in the world, but if you have a fear of flying, all the training will be useless if you cannot apply it. Start immediately in re-programming your subconscious mind with positive affirmations, Pen and paper, and write statements such as, " I am very self confident". or " Women are attracted to me because of my high level of self confidence". Write each of these affirmations 10 times or more, and do this daily. Use subliminal programs to re-program your sub conscious mind for a high level of self confidence. When the changes take place on the subconscious level, the changes will come from the inside out without interference from your conscious mind. After you have gained a respect for yourself, then check out the IDF ( Israeli defense force) fight system, Krav Maga. This is what law enforcement agents learn. You would benefit greatly from enrolling in a training course, or there are highly effective training films available on the Internet. In summary, start by building your self confidence and mindset and you will find your need for a fight system will have diminished considerably. But if you feel the need, get some Krav Maga training and you will be mentally equiped to fight to the finish and come out the winner whether against CQB ( Close Quarter Battle) hand to hand or weapons attack. Note: Recently, Body Weapons had a special on Krav Maga and the two trainees who were already trained in many martial arts systems, were totally unequiped to deal with the Krav Maga fighters tactics. This included vicious knife attacks from knife fighting professionals, which Krav Maga fighters either disarmed or used weapon to defeat attacker. Darryl S.

Q: Anybody know any good self defense or wrestling moves?
My guy friends sometimes like to pin me from the neck with my arm tied behind me. He's small but he's got more muscle than me and he's smarter than me. So does anybody know any good self-defense moves that I could use against him or some good wrestling moves? And FYI I'm not that strong so would I like have to tone up or something? And what are some good moves to tone your body?

A: This sounds unconventional, but a good Throat Thrust (like Undertaker used to do in the 80's/90's) really hurts, especially if you use your knuckles/finger bones and do it repeatedly. If you want something less serious, I guess a good submission hold like a Sleeper, Triangle, Full Nelson, etc. works. If you want to be funny, try a lifting move like the others suggested and throw your back out. Or, just give him a good kick in the groin or rake in the eyes. Works every time. >_> Oh yeah, and simply lifting weights works fine for building strength/muscle. You don't have to go fancy unless you want to look like one of the wrestlers.

Q: Is it possible to learn self-defense moves from movies?
I never tried it. But I'm thinking of doing it. I know you cannot become a very good fighter by just watching fight scenes in slow motion, but do you think some moves in movies work in real life?

A: if you could learn driving a car without ever using one, and learning how to swim in dry land, you might have a chance LOL

Q: Where can I learn self-defense moves and tactics?
Does anyone here know where online i can learn self-defense techniques? I get into fights in school that i'd rather avoid, so I thought maybe i can just immobilize them and run away. So any good sites that teaches self-defense techniques? Yo guys, I get what you mean, but where i live (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) there anr tany REAL dojos or anything, but trust me a few tips and tricks will go a long way in my school, cause these kids arnt very bright.

A: The internet is a good place to learn ABOUT Martial Arts, but it is not a good place to LEARN Martial Arts. Learning the proper way to execute the various kicks and punches found in any style of Martial Art requires the visual assessment and correction of an experienced instructor. That means the instructor must be present in order for him to see what you are doing wrong and correct it. Only learning one or two things is not the solution. What if they don't work? Now you have sent a message to your opponent that you are ready and able to fight, when you are actually neither. If I am your opponent and you throw some technique at me that is obviously something that only a trained Martial Artist would throw, I am going to immediately assume you are a worthy opponent and I am going to respond with everything in my arsenal. I know you think that if you can learn a couple of things, and as you put it, "Immobilize" them long enough for you to run away, that's all you need, but what if it doesn't work? What if you only succeed in pissing him off more, then what? Get some REAL training, not cyber training.

Q: What are some easy and effective self defense moves?
I am a 14 year old girl and am very small, 5 feet, and i need to know how to defend myself if a huge crzy person wants to kidnap me. Plz help!

A: there are a number of easy to use and effective techniques for self defense. the most important thing, and what you should probably do first is find a qaulified in your area. without practice and proper instruction its unlikely you will respond in an effecient manner no matter how many moves you know. you have to develop mucsle memory in order for learned techniques to work when your heart rate is through the roof and you have a huge surge adrenaline running through your veins and the only way to develop muscle memory is practicing the techniques the right way thousands of times exactly how its supposed to be done. its like tying your shoes, you've done it so many times you dont have to actually think about how to do it, you just do it as soon as you know you have to. its the repititions that have allowed you to ingrain those movements in your body/mind. again, the need for a good instructor is obvious when your practicing those techniques to make sure you're doing them properly so that you won't ingrain the wrong movements and perform poorly when you have to defend yourself. the next thing you should consider when surveying a school or self defense program is the type of techniques that are being taught. if practical self defense is what you're looking for, going to a school that specializes in sport based martial arts is not a good idea. you want a school that teaches proven techniques that are easily learned and will work regardless of size and strength. I would suggest trying a brazilian jujitsu school. there are a few reasons for my suggestion. first, a woman of your stature is most likely always going to have a size strength disadvantage against most any man, and your going to be put in alot of bad positions and brazilian jujitsu(bjj) specializes in fighting from inferior positions. like fighting off of your back, for instance. this is a position that you will find yourself in against a bigger stronger male trying to attack you. especially if rape is on his mind. he would have to put you flat on your back to control you to get what he wanted, and by studying bjj you would have the knowledge required to handle yourself while fighting from off of your back. bjj uses leverage and technique to allow a smaller size person defend themselves against a bigger person. most bjj schools offer self defense programs and with the arts newfound popularity you shouldn't have a hard time locating a school near you. another street proven martial art is krav maga, which may be considered a more well rounded martial art for a self defense student as it covers all aspects of self defense( weapons, multiple opponents, stand up and ground fighting, and situational awareness) using techniques from several martial arts, and also bringing in some military type techniques. krava maga schools are few and far between in my area, but you may be able to find one. no matter what, i applaud your desire to learn to defend yourself and wish you the best of luck.

Q: What are some good and simple self defense moves?
So I am a thirteen year old girl, and am kind of a worrywart about gangs and such. And so I am just wondering what to do if a guy (or girl for that matter) came up to me from the side, from the front or from the back and tried to kidnap me...what should I do? Thanks so much!

A: Again, Shihan J. has some good answers. Always be aware of who is around, and be prepared to avoid danger. That's the most important thing. The next thing is, whatever you do, Fight as hard as you can. Techniques aren't the issue here, the key is, don't go where the kidnapper wants you to, because once he has you, you are at his mercy. Scream, kick, punch, bite, scratch, stomp. Scrape at his face and eyes, kick his shins and knees, hit him with whatever you are carrying with you at the time. Grab his throat and squeeze, grab his balls and twist, hard. Do anything you have to not to be an easy target. And don't think of it as a "fight" where you have to beat up your attacker. Do as much damage as it takes to get the person to let go, then escape and call the police.

Q: Where can I learn some practical self defense moves?
I live in the higher Foothill region in San Fernado Valley. There are no martial art studios around and none of my friends know how to defend themselves either. Can someone give me some advice where I might get some guidance or better yet is there a site that teaches some important moves step by step for dummies basically?

A: www.expertvillage.com there are some great vids there by real experts teaching you defence.

Q: What are easy self defense moves for a small 14 year old girl?

A: kick em' in the pecker!---if its a guy, that is. otherwise, make a open palm strike to their nose. it will break their nose and the bone will go into their brain. or, just as effective, sock them in the jugular(adams apple area.). and that should knock them out. hehe, there's a dirty way to. fell the back of your head? do you feel the bumps and deep parts? sock them right there, it will give them brain damage or, if done right, will put them comatose. oh and you dont need to be strong to do these. i am 14 myself. im tall though. but ya, these should help. youtube is amazing as well. every bit of info at your finger tips. Source(s): im a black belt. WOOT!

Q: Can you show me some videos of effective self defense moves I could practice at home?

A: Look, the best way to defend yourself if you're not going to train is to barrel through the weakest point when surrounded and run like hell. Videos tend to give you something to mimic, but nothing to correct you. You need feedback. If you're set on doing it your way (and I strongly advise you not to), visit http://www.budovideos.com/ and find something there. Find a patient partner and practice. Examine what ifs and try to find effective ways out. It won't be good, but it's something.

Q: Good self defense moves that are very efficient?
I'm not too big, muscular-wise. I am 6' 2" and about 155 pounds. Not a very big guy lol. But i've been thinking if i ever got into a fight with a bigger person than me, what could i do to defend myself? I am pretty skinny so I'm afraid if I were to punch someone bigger than me it wouldnt do much. Anything I could do to inflict damage on someone bigger than me?

A: dirty fighting- for street fighting, and self defense is the most underlooked and underrated thing out there for martial arts- groin shots, throat strikes, improvised weapons, vital striking, ect.

Q: what are some simple self-defense moves?
i want to learn some self defense moves, just in case, and so im not as weak anymore. i mean i dont want people to think they can just kick my butt, i want them to at least think i can DO something!

A: Palm strike to the nose and a Knee to the stomach.

Q: what are some easy street-self defense moves?
I went down town and a strange man grabbed my wrist... my friend kicked it and we ran but now i am parinoid what are some self defense things i can do? one of my friends said that jabbing the curve of a persons neck (where there chin and neck come together) is very painful and stops there breathing for a second or two what are some other things i should know?

A: Glock 9mm, Uzi, A chop across the adams apple will disable any person, if they cant breath, they cant hurt you, unless they are armed...kick to da gonads, eye gouge. Maybe just sign up for some Karate lessons, they teach great defense, and discipline as well. Of course, if you miss, your toast. Best moves are practiced over and over again, take Karate...or buy a Pittbull.

Q: What is the best self defense move when in a sitting position?
I'm in shotokan karate and know lots of self defense moves that work while standing, but what can I do if I am sitting and someone tries to attack me? (purely hypothetical here)

A: what you want to do,is to practice mobility in a sitting position first. on the floor ,in a chair. practice pivoting and kicks to legs, knees, groin. blocking may be done one-armed. sometimes from a chair its easier to just tip back and roll onto the floor, and roll into a stance. its scary at first, but start on a mat. later you can do it easy onto the floor and even come up with the chair to guard you if its light enough.(you push with legs and tip backwards, use your arm like a backfall extended to take the shock, tuck the head, bring your knees up close ,and using momentum, keep rolling over into a stance)

Q: Self-Defense?
I live in a quiet town. Recently, though, a man was trying to "abduct" girls while they were walking. Needless to say, I walk A LOT. And I'm worried because this happened only a couple streets away from me and I have to cross it to get to the other side of town....Yikes! So, my question would be what are some good and (semi)easy self defense moves that I could use on an attacker? Ideally, it would be something that I could do to make someone unable to use strength against me (temporarily paralyzed? Does that sound wrong?) and make them stay put while i got help, called someone, etc. etc., depending on the situation. Thanks!

A: Know that if you decide to use self defense measures you need to be 100% committed to be willing to inflict pain. No halfway measures. If that is where you are, aim for the most vulnerable parts of the body. Stomp down HARD on the instep. Kick HARD into the groin. Use the palm of your hand and thrust it upward HARD into the nose. The key here is to do any of these moves with FORCE. The fact that you fight back at all will likely buy you a few seconds. If the move is effective, you will have a few more. Then RUN. Leave the area. Do NOT call, stop and look back or anything else, until you are safely out of range. And SCREAM all the way. LOUD and long. Yell FIRE, do not call for help. More people will respond to a call about fire. P.S. All of this assumes the attacker is unarmed. If he is armed that changes things a LOT.

Q: Anyone know some good self defense moves?
I tried searching this on google, but mostly the sites that came up seemed like they were trying to sell me something. Note: this information will not be used to bully or pick fights with anyone, I am only trying to prepare myself in case I ever need to defend myself against some thug. not exactly the answer I was looking for...

A: Self-defense is not something you can look up and learn by yourself. If it was that easy the long time martial artists like myself would have quit long ago. You can learn how to defend yourself by asking here either. It takes dedication and a good instructor as well as training partners to learn properly. Otherwise you will be leaning wrong and will not know just how wrong it is until you get flattened by someone. A good instructor will see your errors and fix them. You will ont be able to do that for yourself.
