self defense classes questions and answers
Q: Where could i take free self defense classes?
I have been looking into taking a martial arts class, but it is so pricey. Are there any free self defense classes? I was thinking something put out by the community.
A: i think the YMCA, was going to start having those
check out the one closest to you
Q: Are there self defense classes for men or only for women?
Are there any self defense classes I can take that teaches me to defend my self against anyone, Man or women??
I'm a very small man and I don't know how to defend my self, I've never been in a fight and I'm scared that I may be attacked if I go out by my self.
A: You could take a Martial Arts class to help or even take up MMA!
Q: What Self Defense classes offered in Kansas City are recommended?
I am looking for a self defense class for my girlfriend and her sister to attend in KCMO/KCK Metro area. Are there any that you recommend and where did you go?
A: For cheap and quick, they might appreciate the Women's Self Defense Seminar held by the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. Go to www.kcpd.org for more information. All I know about this seminar is from online, but I always recommend that people get to know their local police.
The best self-defense training comes from long-term martial arts training. For that, I recommend your girlfriend and her sister consider either of the two AKTA schools in Kansas City: Choon Lee's Academy (Shawnee) and Blue Valley Tae Kwon Do (Overland Park). I've trained and tested at the Shawnee branch, though I live hundreds of miles away.
By the way, if for whatever reason neither Choon Lee's nor Blue Valley are good fits for your girlfriend and her sister, then a master from one of those schools can recommend a more appropriate location.
Q: Do i need to be certified to teach Self Defense classes to people?
I have done lots of martial arts, but im really good with just plain old self defense. I meet with some of my friends and teach lessons to them, but i was wondering if i needed to actually get certified to start teaching classes to the public. I am not a master of martial arts or anything.. but i have been training in self defense for about 8 years now. If i need to get certified, where in texas (near Austin area) can i get my certification without taking a bunch of self defense classes?
Thanks for your help!!
A: I don't know a single place in the US that requires any certification to teach martial arts. Mostly because there is no universal teaching certification in the arts themselves. Each art has it's own requirements.
However, if you are training with a master or sensei, I would get his blessing to do it.
Q: Do women self defense classes really work?
Im going to college and i hear of alot of women getting attacked and i was thinking of taking self defense classes for women but do they really work?
A: Sure they work. Anything to help defend yourself is well worth it!
Good luck.
Q: How should I convince my wife to join self-defense classes?
I told her once but my approach was not right...so she got mad. Since then(4-5 days) we have not talked on this topic. But I really want her to be able to defend her self not from me☺ but devils of Delhi.
She is not weak and she has slapped quite a few guys but I want her to join something like Karate classes. I have even thought if she would agree on getting licensed firearm. What should I say to her? Please do your self a favour and suggest something not offensive.
Thank you kindly for your answers.
A: Haha so interesting
Anyways
Tell her calmly to join a self-defense class. Tell the possible consequences and as u mentioned about that few devils in Delhi. Or I will definately convince her believe me. I am currently learning Taekwondo and its so cool. Its like Karate. So I can probably give her some tips and strategies and she will be eager to learn that.
Anyways
Take Care
Cheers!!!!!!!!

Q: How much would it cost for self defense classes?
I'm wanting to take Taikondo, or some form of marshal arts and was wondering how much it would cost for classes and how long it would take for just a beginner to earn a black belt?
A: The classes my husband takes are $89 a month. I don't know how long it would take to get a black belt as everybody learns at their own pace.
Q: Do women who take self-defense classes know what they're up against?
Power, and meanness are the main attributes necessary to defeat someone who is attacking you. If you have the time and proper trainer, you can somewhat make up for shortcomings in power and meanness, but it's still unlikely.
I'm concerned about any false sense of security that might cause a woman to stick around when they should be running or whatever. Do women's self-defense instructors teach students to be realistic?
I'm saying that skill is nowhere near as important as power.
Running and precautions are more important. Otherwise, you'll have to take years of classes from guys like this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=PR97yKSiUSg&mode=related&search=
A: I've never taken a self defense class, but I watched a news segment about one....
The most important thing they teach is to learn how to carry yourself as a NON VIABLE VICTIM.
Ideally...if a woman walks and carries herself in a way that portrays confidence and power, (as apposed to one that cowers with her head hung low...looking afraid of her own shadow)....she is less likely to become a victim in the first place.
Once she becomes a victim....the odds are against her, as most men have a physical advantage over us, they are already fired up in aggressive mode, and have taken her by surprise, catching her off guard.
Prevention is key....oh and speaking of keys....they recommend that women carry their keys in the hand as a potential weapon if self defense is necessary.
You're right though....if she gets attacked she's going to have to get mean and fight dirty...and it would be a lot more traumatic and violent than the classroom experience!
Q: Hey people I need self defense classes, does anybody know any place that gives self defense classes?
I need classes for a kid of the age of 7 if any body knows I will apreciatte it a lot, thanks.
A: If you could email me this question and tell me where you live and what city then I can tell you a place near there. I take Hopkido. It's martial arts. So, I am sure I can find a place that you can take self defense classes. My email is layanne1234567890@yahoo.com.
Q: Self defense classes for girls should not include kicking or kneeing a guy where it hurts the most. Opinions?
Guys are extremely vulnerable there.
It has a sexual connotation and is unfeminine.
It can also damage a person emotionally and psychologically.
It is certainly inappropriate for the pre-teens.
There are many other "just as effective" techniques for the weaker sex to stop an attack:
Palm heel to face, nose , chin;
Punch to throat or solar plexus;
kick to knee, shin;
stomp on instep.
A: if a guy attacks a girl he deserves to be kicked there.
Q: What type of martial art is best for self-defense classes (specifically for women)?
I'm a 20 year old female. I'm moving out on my own, and I'll be living alone in an apartment complex. I'll be working kinda late hours too. I have been wanting to learn some self-defense techniques for a while now, but I'm not sure where to start.
I have no past experience with Martial Arts. I have good kinetic skills, and I respect it as an "art" form. I could be known somewhat of a "girly girl" but I can become very driven and competitive (with myself). I would take this seriously with no doubt.
I also would like to get a heads up on what I might expect in basic training for the Marine Corps, as I will be on the Delayed Entry Program next fall. I believe this type is directed more towards complex combat/submission style, which isn't my main focus as of now. But I wouldn't mind learning anything that might put me a step ahead in boot camp next year.
So, for those who know.....
What would you recommend I get into?
How much would you expect classes to cost (average)?
Thanks =)
A: Congrats on your upcoming service.
First and foremost, with the information you just gave I would definately consider spending some time invested in getting a conceal and carry permit (if the state permits), and looking to carry a firearm in addition to self defense. Pepper Spray, Tazers, ASPs. etc are all great additions to have as well. What ever is legal and affordable for you.
Self Defense wise, I agree with the above poster about Judo (they have plenty of joint manipulation) and a large portion of military self defense techniques (Modern Army Combatitives and like) have a lot of Judo and BJJ at their base. Essentially they train MMA now, with a few more things added.
I would suggest Judo, MMA, BJJ, all of which are pretty female friendly now a days. Krav Maga classes are also really good but hard to find a good one. (One that truly teaches it, and isn't some fitness trainer certified in it).
You want a heads up for bootcamp, Judo is great. Krav Maga is also great (taught to the Israeli Defense Force)Aikido, not so much, they do some small joint manipulation, but most of their training in throws and the like aren't practical. The throws you learn in Boot Camp will be Judo and Greco Roman throws, sweeps, and reaps. The joint locks mostly Judo (with some BJJ and Sambo)The striking mostly Muay Thai. And some improvised weapons, utilizing your weapon and bayonet, and some nastiness that you will generally find in Krav Maga.
A good heads up would totally be MMA as an ideal, (but it is a lot to learn with each aspect if you don't have a lot of time)Krav Maga (again a good school that actually spars and has resistance) Judo is also great, as 60 to 70 percent of the things you learn in the Marines will be Judo and BJJ based. (The strikes, again Muay Thai) and Muay Thai, or kickboxing.
If you are driven and competetive you can gain a lot out of those.
You can expect to pay abour 30-50 bucks a month for any of those, sometimes more depending on location and what is available, and quality of instruction. Anything over 100 is crazy.
Avoid any of the following:
Contracts, any place that has kids with black belts, any place where the instructor does not have a proven record easily verified record. (if he says he is 100-0 in pro fights he is most likely lying). Or any place that tells you what they do is too deadly to practice on each other, that it is only meant "for the streets". Any place that has promotion fees for anything under black belt. Any place that teaches "Muy Tai" or other such mispellings and offers a belt system for it.
Also avoid any place that teaches "MMA" but the instructor has never fought, and has never taught or has any active fighter. (www.sherdog.com and http://fcfighter.brinkster.net/ can check records).
Also avoid anyone who has made up their own style or is a 10th degree master of something and isn't 70+ years old.
Anything you find that will be enjoyable and not rip you off will help honestly, you will gain discipline, self confidence, and some useable techniques. Just avoid the McDojos, and any art that doesn't spar, and you will be good to go.
Check out www.bullshido.com on their forum section, or their dojo reveiw, they have members all over the world, and more than likely can direct you to a quality place, or verify the credentials of anyone you come across.
Also avoid any place that doesn't have a black belt teaching there. (You find this more with BJJ than anything, many brown, purple, and blue belts trying to charge people for teaching them BJJ, while you can gain a lot from them, you shouldn't have to pay unless it is a steal).
Good luck, hope that is of some help. Message me if you any questions, I will be happy to answer.

Q: Do you think it's good for women to take self defense classes?
I've been thinking about it, but would it really help if a 300 pound man came up behind me?
A: I think it would help. The training is not all just about physically protecting yourself, but also preparing yourself mentally for situations that may become life threatening. It would be a good idea to check into it.
